Denver Middle School is made up of grades 6, 7 and 8. Middle level students experience unique physical, psychological, social, intellectual, moral, and ethical developmental characteristics. The staff at the school strives to provide academic excellence and developmental responsiveness for all middle level students. The advisor-advisee program at the sixth grade level assists in the transition from elementary to middle school.
The curriculum addresses substantive issues and skills relevant to the students, enabling them to assume control of their own learning, connect school experiences to their daily lives outside school, and discover their own abilities and opportunities. There is a balance of core classes and a wide variety of exploratories.
Core classes at each level include: reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science and physical education. Exploratories include: technology, art, family and consumer science, business, guidance, health, Spanish, music, educational theater and problem solving. Band and vocal music are offered as electives.
Students also have extracurricular opportunities in both sports and academics. 6th graders may participate in Math Bee, Spelling Bee, and History Day. 7th and 8th graders can participate in MathCounts, Spelling Bee, and Leadership (8th only), football, volleyball, cross country, basketball, wrestling, track, softball, baseball and cheerleading.
